From Test Automation to Scriptless Test Automation

Executive Summary:

Shifting from manual testing to automated testing is a big leap towards increased efficiency of testing. Test automation has its own set of daunting challenges which can be mitigated by going scriptless. Scriptless test automation can turbo charge your testing and unleash many benefits. In this article, let us first try to understand the challenges associated with test automation with frameworks like Selenium, Cypress, or cucumber etc.

Challenges of test automation with frameworks:

  • Difficulty of dealing with frameworks directly: Any framework, let it be Selenium, Cypress, or Playwright, is difficult to automate. There is a steep learning curve associated with each one of them. Automating directly with frameworks is also resource intensive. You need specialized expertise for multiple tools associated with each framework.

  • Difficult to manage large scale implementations: Automation projects are becoming bigger and more complex. The requirement for testing has increased and so have the number and frequency of releases.

  • Poor test coverage: Even though automation with frameworks is better when compared with manual testing when it comes to test coverage, going scriptless you realize the true power of enhanced test coverage. Test coverage is a lead indicator of reduction in defect leakage. Scriptless test automation can enable you to increase your test coverage by 5 to 6 times so that you have no defects leaking into your releases.

  • Difficult to test simultaneously in multiple environments: Today, testing is a continuous process and not a one time activity which happens in periodic sprints. Application moves through environments, tested in each environment to ensure that the final release is flawless. Scriptless test automation makes multi-environment testing not only manageable but also resource friendly.

  • Dependency on skilled resources: When you do not have a centralized tool/platform which can lay out best practices, roadmaps, and protocols, all of this will be done by individuals and hence, you will never have a centralized , human independent knowledge framework. Working directly with frameworks means the knowledge and expertise will always be with the individuals which increases the dependency on them. Going scriptless will ensure that the tool/platform holds all the best practices and methodologies in form on initial configurations and will reduce the dependency on individuals.

  • Attrition: Test automation reduces the need for manual testers but does not eliminate the need for skilled resources. You will need experts who understand the frameworks and have mastered the knowhow. This makes companies susceptible to negative impact from attrition. Attrition creates knowledge gaps, bridging them consumes time and resources.

  • Script maintenance: Maintaining scripts is a big task. Often, companies succumb under the load of maintaining innumerable scripts and things become unmanageable.

  • Lack of granular reporting: Intelligent reporting offers a definitive upper hand by enabling you to identify repetitive showstoppers. Conventional test automation does not provide in-depth reporting which creates bottlenecks in the testing process.

Benefits of Scriptless Test Automation:

All the challenges that one faces while automating the frameworks are taken care of by scriptless test automation
tools. Scriptless test automation tools work as a layer between the framework and the user and eliminate most
associated efforts. Here are some of the benefits of scriptless test automation tools over and above just test
automation.

Reduced script maintenance:

Scriptless test automation significantly reduces script maintenance. For some of our clients, going scriptless has resulted in maintenance efforts going down by 80 to 90%.

Increased test coverage:

Scriptless test automation can improve your test coverage by as high as 80-90%. This increased test coverage means more confidence in every release that you make.

Reduced total cost of automation:

Test automation has its own costs. Going scriptless can bring down the cost of automation by as much as 70-80%. These costs benefits are a result of reduced maintenance and reduced
dependence on human resource.

Test even before the application is ready:

Scriptless test automation tools support CI/CD and you can start testing even before your application is ready.

Reusability:

Going scriptless is the only way of managing the scale and the speed. Scriptless test automation gives reusability which helps immensely in pan-regions deployment as 40-50% of core application remains the same for each
region.
